For construction project managers, drywall contractors, and building material distributors, wall cracking is a costly problem. It can lead to significant budget overruns, project delays, and damage to a contractor's reputation.
The main causes of wall cracking are structural settlement, temperature fluctuations, and natural chemical shrinkage during mortar curing. Cement or plaster is subjected to enormous tensile forces when drying. Because mortar is inherently brittle, it will inevitably crack under such tensile stress.
High-quality fiberglass mesh acts as a connector. By embedding a high-strength, alkali-resistant mesh material into the plaster layer, weak points can be effectively reinforced, and the pressure borne by the cement/plaster can be evenly distributed across the fiberglass mesh. This reinforcement prevents structural damage, keeping the wall surface smooth, flawless, and durable.
Choose by Project Location: Use 80g-100g mesh for interior walls and plasterboard joints; use 160g mesh for exterior wall insulation (EIFS/ETICS).
Choose by Structural Tensile Strength: Lightweight mesh (80g-120g) is suitable for flexible interior wall plastering; heavy-duty mesh (160g-300g) is suitable for high impact protection and extreme weather resistance.
In the global wholesale market, fiberglass mesh is categorized by its weight, measured in grams per square meter (GSM). To maximize your procurement budget and ensure your building passes local structural inspections, you must select the appropriate mesh weight based on the tensile strength the walls will withstand.
With over 17+ years of manufacturing and export experience, SUGRAND provides detailed specifications to help you choose the right fit:
Weight(GSM) | Features | Suitable for |
80-100 | Lightweight and Resilient to Deformation | Interior Plastering, Drywall Joint Tape, and Drywall Reinforcement |
120-140 | Enhanced Durability | Interior Wall Crack Repair and Old Home Renovation |
160 | Exceptional Tensile Strength | EIFS and ETICS |
300 | Maximum Strength and Protection | Extreme Conditions: Support for heavy stone/marble slabs or areas subject to frequent impacts |
Many building material dealers, in an effort to reduce costs, purchase cheap, untreated fiberglass mesh. Within months of installation, the mesh completely dissolves within the wall, causing cracks and serious damage.
Why does this happen? Cement is highly alkaline, with a pH value typically exceeding 12. Ordinary fiberglass undergoes severe chemical degradation in this environment, losing its tensile strength.
SUGRAND's fiberglass mesh is treated with a special alkali-resistant (AR) polymer latex coating. Tested to retain over 70% of its tensile strength even after continuous immersion in a highly alkaline solution for 28 days, our fiberglass mesh fully complies with international engineering standards.
Even the highest quality fiberglass mesh is ineffective if improperly installed. For optimal reinforcement and to pass quality audits, please refer to the following installation steps:
First Layer of Cement: Use a trowel to evenly apply a layer of mortar or plaster to the wall substrate.
Embedding the Fiberglass Mesh: Lay the SUGRAND fiberglass mesh onto the wet mortar. Use a trowel to smooth it from the center outwards. Ensure at least 10 cm overlap between adjacent rolls to prevent seam cracking.
Second Layer of Cement: Immediately apply a second layer of cement to the embedded fiberglass mesh. Never leave the fiberglass mesh exposed on the wall.
Painting: Once the surface is dry, spray on your desired paint or plaster to finish the wall. The installation is now complete.
