The fabric type has weeds that grow up into it within months. This plastic nothing grows through unless you cut it or it has a rock under it that over time opens to a hole. This is the type of plastic we used in our greenhouse business and it lasted 5+ years out in the fields.

I have shade cloths that are 50% and 70%. This one states that it is 40%, but it seems to provide much less shade than the 50% shade cloth I purchased from an agricultural supplier. On the positive side, it certainly is lightweight and easy to maneuver and if you are looking for light shade, I would think it could be used on most any veggie crop.

Bought this 40% sun block fabric to protect my young hot pepper plants from 10 hours of direct sunlight per day. After a month, they're all healthy but also growing well/getting enough sun. This fabric also serves to keep the birds from eating my peppers, which they have done in the past because birds are immune to capcaisin. This fabric has held up well, and rain goes right through it.
